I-77 in the Carolinas

Currently, I-77 enters North Carolina from Virginia.  It bypasses Mt. Airy, and runs through the cities of Statesville, Davidson, Huntersville and Charlotte before continuing to South Carolina, where it serves Rock Hill, Great Falls, and Winnsboro before terminating in Columbia.

The proposed I-77 corridor would continue south of Columbia along US 321 before hitting US 301.  It would enter Georgia along US 301.

Sections of US 321 and US 301 would have to be upgraded to Interstate standards in order for I-77 to continue southward from Columbia.  Alternately, a new parallel route could also be built.

AN I-177 SPUR ROUTE INTO COLUMBIA?: Currently, the freeway connecting I-77 to Columbia is signed as SC 277.  If it's upgraded to an interstate spur, it would be renamed I-177.
